Kitsap Beekeeping will offer a HONEY EXTRACTION AND DEARTH PREPAREDNESS CLASS at 10 a.m. on July 11, 2026 at our shop in Port Orchard, Washington. Cost is $25 per person which is then given back to you as store credit for any purchases you may need to make at the event or during the last half of the beekeeping season! The class will run about two hours and you are welcome to stay longer for a group or individual question-and-answer. My goal is that you not leave with unanswered questions.

Purchase your reservation today as slots are limited!

AGENDA (Subject to change):

  • Brief introductions
  • Share your challenges/successes
  • General talk on extraction - why, when, how
  • Demo of removing frames from hive
  • Demo of manual extractor - how to stop radical shimmy
  • Demo of motorized extractor
  • How to test the moisture content of your honey and why it is important
  • What is the dearth and should it be a scary thing?
  • Mite treatment
  • Methods to safeguard your bees from yellowjackets during the dearth
  • Methods to keep your hives productive and robust during the dearth
  • Next steps: What to do to prepare for the fall flow! (my personal favorite!)
  • Questions, discussion, shared experiences.

Stay as long as you like after the class to speak with me about any concerns or questions you may have on ANY beekeeping topic! The store will also be open should you wish to shop or order any gear.

This is a RAIN OR SHINE event. We do have a large covered area but please bring whatever apparel you need to stay comfortable if there is inclement weather. If you wish to be seated, PLEASE BRING A CAMPING CHAIR WITH YOU. Beekeepers have to work in all kinds of weather, so this will be good practice. But fingers crossed for good weather!

WE ASK THAT YOU PARK ON THE STREET. It's a long street with parking on each side, just please leave room for neighbors to get through. Thank you!

And now for the unfortunate sucky part: All in-person and online classes and workshops will now be subject to sales tax for people located in Washington State
