Candy boards are often considered an essential for overwintering beehives as they provide an easily accessible feeding source for bees, making it a breeze to add food as needed without completely exposing the hive to cold air. While not as efficient as a Vivaldi board in this regard, candy boards do hold more volume so checkups are not required as frequently. They are not intended to be used year-round, another difference between candy boards and Vivaldi boards - as the Vivaldi boards can be used to ventilate in hot summer months. Instructions on using the candy board are available on request.
Specify 8- or 10-frame hives. Delivered unpainted. If you need them painted, there is an additional $4 charge per board.
Note: The photo was taken with plywood beneath it. That plywood you see through the screen is not part of the board. When placed on the hive you will see the frames through the candy board wire.
Solid construction, glued AND screwed rather than just stapled
Dado and shiplap joinery keeps everything tight and square
Wire is mounted to the top of an inner shelf, meaning there is no gap between the quilt and the hive body where the wire sits directly over the body
Wire mounting configuration leaves room for pollen patties, if desired
Wire is attached to a center support to ensure stability and load-bearing capacity of the candy board
Custom-built and prepared unpainted, unless specified ($4 extra painting fee)
