Outside of mite infestation, the number one killer of beehives in the Pacific Northwest (and other areas) is moisture. Bees can handle the cold, but they can not survive when cold water condenses in the hive and drips on them. The moisture quilt helps mitigate this concern by providing ventilation and absorbent materials. Simply put the moisture quilt above your deeps and fill it with wood shavings, burlap or other absorbent material of your choice.
