Did you know that outside of varroa mites, most beehives die out in winter due to condensation issues inside the hive and/or starvation? While no one can guarantee that you will keep all your hives alive and viable throughout winter, there are steps you can take (and even different hive styles) to dramatically improve your overwintering odds! We have followed these same, exact steps for years and our losses are now minimal.

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! Kitsap Beekeeping offers numerous classes related to specific, vital aspects of beekeeping. This upcoming class, scheduled for August 21, will cover all aspects of successful over-wintering, with methods so simple that first-year keekeepers can walk away confident that their beehives, if properly equipped and set up, can handle just about any winter variations common to the Pacific Northest.

Last year's class was a huge success for many and quite a few of you have mentioned that you'd like another one this year. I will be adding new topics, as well as covering the information from last year and offering updates where applicable.

NEW THIS YEAR: Poly hives, Layens, Langstroth hives comparisons for overwintering purposes

(Agenda to be posted before the event)

This event will also give you the opportunity to ask any kind of beekeeping question from myself, or other beekeepers in attendance. As an added bonus, should you decide you need to purchase any equipment or supplies from us, you can credit the entire $30 cost of your admission toward those items!

When: August 21, 10:00 a.m. to noonish (let's try to beat the heat!)
Where: Kitsap Beekeeping, located at 11861 Ranch Drive SW in Port Orchard
Cost: $30 per person
Class size: Limited to first 50

The store will be open after the class.

BRING YOUR OWN CHAIR, PLEASE! It's a long time to stand.
PARKING IS ON THE STREET right out in front.

Fine print:  The demo itself will be on a hive without bees and away from the hives, but participants are encouraged to look at the different hive styles and learn the differences between Langstroth, Layens, Apimaye, HiveIQ, AZ hive, long langstroth and more. Anyone near an open hive must wear suitable beekeeping attire. No children below the age of  10 may attend. If you are allergic to bees you are encouraged to bring and/or wear protection.
